If you've been shopping for lab diamonds, you've encountered VS1 and VS2 as adjacent options — VS1 the higher grade, VS2 slightly lower. In most cases you'll notice VS1 costs more. The question is: what are you actually getting for that premium?

The short answer: in most cases, nothing you can see.

What VS1 and VS2 Actually Mean

Both VS1 and VS2 fall in the "Very Slightly Included" category on the IGI/GIA clarity scale. Here's what defines each:

  • VS1: Minor inclusions that are difficult to see under 10x magnification. A trained grader will find them, but it takes effort. Completely invisible to the naked eye.
  • VS2: Minor inclusions that are easier to see than VS1 under 10x magnification. Still completely invisible to the naked eye for brilliant cuts in almost all cases.

The key phrase in both: completely invisible to the naked eye. Both grades are eye-clean. The difference between VS1 and VS2 exists only under a 10x loupe — not in how the diamond looks in a ring, pendant, or pair of earrings.

The Price Difference

On a comparable lab diamond, VS1 typically commands a 5–15% premium over VS2 at the same shape, cut, color, and carat weight. On a 1ct stone, that could be $100–$400 depending on the other grades. On a 2ct stone, the difference grows proportionally.

That premium buys you a better grade on the certificate — and nothing else visible in the piece.

When VS1 Is Worth It

There are legitimate cases to choose VS1 over VS2:

Step-Cut Shapes

Emerald cuts and asscher cuts have long, open facets that function as windows into the stone. Inclusions that would be invisible in a round brilliant can become visible in a step cut. For emerald and asscher cuts, VS1 is the recommended minimum — VS2 may or may not be eye-clean in these shapes.

Larger Carat Weights

As carat weight increases, the table (top facet) of the diamond gets larger. A tiny inclusion that was well-hidden at 0.5ct becomes slightly more visible at 2ct. For stones above 1.5ct, some buyers prefer VS1 as a safeguard, particularly in lighter clarity patterns.

The Certificate Matters to You

If you specifically want the best possible grade documentation — for resale purposes, insurance, or personal preference — VS1 gives you a slightly stronger specification. There's nothing wrong with wanting a cleaner grade on paper. Just be honest with yourself that it's a preference, not a practical visual upgrade.

A Specific Stone Has Borderline VS2 Inclusions

Clarity grading involves some human judgment. A stone graded VS2 with an inclusion in a borderline position — close to eye-clean but slightly large or central — might prompt you to spend a bit more for a VS1 stone with a clearly better clarity plot. Always look at the clarity plot, not just the grade.

When VS2 Is the Better Choice

For the vast majority of buyers shopping brilliant-cut diamonds (round, oval, cushion, pear) at under 1.5ct, VS2 is the better choice:

  • The stone looks identical to VS1 in daily wear
  • You save 5–15% on the stone cost
  • The savings can be reallocated to a better cut, a larger carat, or simply kept in your pocket
  • VS2 is documented and certified by IGI — you have independent verification of the grade

The practical philosophy: buy the grade where you can't see the next level up, and allocate savings to factors that do change what you see — primarily cut and carat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you tell the difference between VS1 and VS2 in a ring?
No. Both grades are eye-clean in brilliant cuts. The difference is only visible under 10x magnification.

Is VS2 "good enough" for fine jewelry?
Absolutely. VS2 is an excellent clarity grade for any fine jewelry piece and is the most popular choice among knowledgeable buyers.

Does VS1 hold its value better than VS2?
Marginally — the certificate grade is slightly stronger. But the practical difference in resale value is minimal. Neither lab diamonds in VS1 nor VS2 should be purchased as investment vehicles.
